Fishing team ranked 19th in national standings

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The Greenville University fishing team has joined the top 20 as the 19th ranked team in the Bass Pro Shops School of the Year competition.

The School of the Year rankings serve as the premier national rankings for fishing teams across the country. These rankings are unique in that there are no divisions or conferences taken into account. Rather, small universities such as Greenville are put up against teams from large universities such as University of Illinois, Ohio State, and Purdue University.

As of the Oct. 29 standings, 299 universities and colleges were listed. The rankings take into account every sanctioned college fishing tournament which takes place throughout the course of the year. Point values are attached to each finishing place, and the team's highest finisher at each event is awarded points. 1st place may receive 500 points, 2nd may receive 490, and 3rd may receive 480, and on down to last place. With some events drawing nearly 300 boats, it can be difficult to place in the top couple spots.

The School of the Year rankings begin and end in May, meaning November represents the halfway point of the season. The Panthers have built a solid base for the year with good finishes at Lake of the Ozarks, Kentucky Lake, and a win on Glenn Shoals Lake in Hillsboro. There is also room for improvement, as there are many events scheduled all across the country for the spring months. The team's next chance to move up in the rankings comes on Nov. 9 in the form of the Illinois State Championship and Illinois Bass Nation tournament held on Kinkaid Lake.

This year, the Panthers also have an extra opportunity to earn valuable School of the Year points. With two teams qualified for the 2020 FLW National Championship, it is a shot at an extra 1000 School of the Year points that the team did not have last year.

With a 25th place finish in the School of the Year rankings last year, the Panthers are looking to stay in the top 20 this year, and hoping to even break into the top 15. With events planned in Texas, Louisiana, Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Wisconsin, be on the lookout for the team to move up in the standings.
