Men's basketball comeback versus Principia comes up short

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The men's basketball team mounted a comeback effort over the last 12 minutes of Tuesday night's SLIAC matchup against Principia, but GU was defeated 128-119.

At halftime, Principia held a 66-54 lead after leading by as many as 19 points in the first half, but GU tightened the difference to 12 points by halftime.

In the second half, PC had a 96-78 lead with just under 12 minutes to play, but GU cut the lead down to 114-109 over the next eight minutes.

Greenville reduced the deficit to 114-112 with a three pointer from Kaidyn Johnson with 3:55 left in the game, and later the score stood at 120-117 with just over one minute remaining.

GU had a chance to tied the score but could not, and Principia outdistanced Greenville 8-2 over the last 75 seconds.

Jarred Johnson led Greenville with 25 points, knocking down 10-of-15 shots, 4-of-7 three pointers, and 1-of-2 free throws.

Travis Dickey led GU's second unit with 16 points, and Cam Irvin added 14 points.

Starter Romello Ball finished with 13 points, and Kaidyn Johnson produced 12 points.

The Panthers (1-11, 0-1 SLIAC) face Webster at home on Saturday in H.J. Long Gymnasium at 3 p.m.
