Men's soccer ties Spalding in SLIAC contest

O'FALLON, Ill. - The men's soccer team hosted Spalding at the O'Fallon Family Sports Park, and the team used a second half come-from-behind effort to send the match to overtime. The teams tied 2-2 after double overtime.

In the first half, the Spalding offense tested Greenville with a 5-3 shot advantage and goals in the 14th and 19th minutes.

After the Panthers regrouped for the second half, Christian Fuentes deflected a shot by Kyle Sunderland for Greenville's first goal in the 71st minute. Three minutes later, Juan Salazar connected for a goal when he took a series of quick passes from Lucas Soares and Luis Partida and placed it in the net.

Greenville outshot Spalding 8-6 in the second half, and the teams were even with 11 shots per side going into overtime.

The first overtime period saw Spalding with more chances as they produced four shots, and GU goalkeeper Gerardo Lopez had to come up with two saves.

In the second OT, Greenville had the better chances with a 2-1 shot advantage and putting one shot on frame.

Pablo Valverde led GU in the contest with three shots, including two shots on goal.

Lopez managed to produce three saves.

The Panthers (0-3-2, 0-1-1 SLIAC) will host Illinois College on Wednesday in Greenville.
