Men's soccer narrowly defeated by Westminster

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The men's soccer team dropped a 4-3 decision to Westminster in overtime on Wednesday afternoon as they returned to their home pitch at Francis Field for their first match since the 2019 fall season.

Greenville took the early lead when Benn Jane deposited a pass from Jose Soutullo in the net to give GU a 1-0 lead. The Panthers held the 1-0 advantage for the remainder of the period and into the second half.

In the second 45 minutes, Westminster tied the score at 1-1 when Greenville deflected a ball into their own net, but soon thereafter, Jared McPeek scored an unassisted goal in the 53rd minute to allow GU to regain the lead.

After Westminster tied the score for the second time in the 56th minute, Greenville's Pablo Valverde added a goal in the 62nd minute to put GU back on top 3-2.

The Blue Jays were not finished scoring, and they tied the game in the 72nd minute, sending the contest to overtime.

In the overtime period, the Blue Jays scored the match-winning goal in the first 30 seconds.

The Panthers ended the match with 15 shots, including seven shots on goal. Napoleon Urquidi led GU with three shots.

Goalkeeper Gerardo Lopez posted five saves in the match.

The Panthers (1-4-2, 1-2-1 SLIAC) will host Webster on Saturday in Greenville.
