Men's soccer concludes season with 3-1 loss to Washington-St. Louis

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The men's soccer team completed their season against Washington-St. Louis on Monday night at Francis Field. Playing in front of the home crowd for the final time, Greenville pulled ahead 1-0 in the first half and later had a penalty kick goal taken away that would have tied the score at 2-2 before GU ultimately fell 3-1.

Greenville's goal in the third minute of the game came after Luis Duran played a ball over the top of the defense to a streaking Juan Salazar who slotted the ball past the keeper for his fourth goal of the season at the 2:27 mark.

In the 31st minute of the match, Washington tied the score at 1-1, and later took a 2-1 lead in the 56th minute of the match.

In the 66th minute of the match, the Bears were called for a foul in the box, and Duran was awarded the penalty kick. He put the first ball past Washington's goalkeeper, but the referee determined that Duran had stopped on his attempt. This resulted in the referee nullifying the goal and requiring Duran to shoot again. On Duran's second attempt, he hit the right post, and the score stayed at 2-1.

Washington ended the match with a 22-7 shot advantage, and the Panthers were led by Juan Salazar and Luis Partida with two shots each. Salazar converted his an attempt for a goal, and Pablo Valverde, Sergio Lamolda, and Duran all ended with shots that were stopped by the Bears goalkeeper.

Greenville's Gerardo Lopez and David Quijano combined to protect the net for GU. Lopez ended with three saves, and Quijano had four saves.

"We were very competitive throughout the season, and I'm very proud of the guys," said head coach Chris Swift. "The depth of our squad was apparent throughout the season, and we look forward to getting back at it in the fall when we are playing for a chance to appear in the NCAA Division III tournament."
