Softball loses NCAA tournament game at Hope

HOLLAND, Mich. -- The softball team suffered an 8-0 defeat in six innnings during the first round of the NCAA tournament on Thursday.  The loss broke Greenville's 13-game winning streak.

The Panthers opened the game with a baserunner when Jordyn Wieland reached on an error, but she was erased in a "strike out, throw out double play" with Josie Koontz batting.

Hope put a run on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first and the score stayed 1-0 until Hope exploded for six runs in the fourth after an error should have ended the inning.

Koontz had the only hit for Greenville.

"You have to give Hope credit," said head coach Buddy Foster.  "They took advantage of our mistakes with two outs and put a big inning on us.  It's hard to come back from that."

Maegan Stone started in the circle for Greenville and only permitted one earned run in four innings.

The Panthers (21-16) face Franklin on Saturday in an elimination game.  Friday's games were postponed due to inclement weather.
