Softball earns split against William Woods

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The softball team competed against William Woods on Wednesday at Panther Field in a non-conference doubleheader.  Greenville won game one 8-5 and lost 5-1 in the second game.

The Panthers received two home runs and five RBI's in game one from Beth Mersinger.  She connected in the first inning on a two-run shot and hit a three-run bomb in the third inning.  Over the last two days, Mersinger has provided four home runs and 18 RBI.

Deidra Holzhauer added a two run homer for Greenville in game one.

Holzhauer also pitched, working six innings and permitting five runs, two earned.  Caitie Opp relieved with a scoreless inning for her first save.

In game two, the Panthers fell behind 2-0, but they scored in the bottom of the fourth with a sacrifice fly off the bat of Amanda Atteberry to make the score 2-1.

William Woods expanded their lead to four runs in the top of the fifth inning with a bases-clearing three-run double.

Opp started the game in the circle and worked four innings, allowing two runs.  Cayla Speaks gave up the three runs in the fifth inning and pitched 1.1 innings before yielding to Kendall Farr who closed the game with 1.2 innings of relief.

The Panthers (19-9) host Spalding at Noon on Saturday in Greenville.
