Women's basketball surrenders fourth quarter lead in loss to Illinois College

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The women's basketball team led by as many as eight points in the first quarter, but Illinois College came back and defeated Greenville 76-72 on Saturday afternoon at H.J. Long Gymnasium.

The Panthers received seven points in the first quarter from Emily Reinneck, and the GU team held a 20-14 lead after the first period.

The Lady Blues took the lead in the second quarter and held it until halftime, taking a 36-34 lead over Greenville at the intermission. Madelyn Stephen recorded seven of the Panthers 14 points in the second quarter.

In the third quarter, Illinois College led by as many as five points on a number of occasions, and the Panthers faced a 55-50 deficit going into the final frame.

Greenville scored five unanswered points to tie the score at 55-all in the early moments of the fourth quarter and eventually managed to take a 67-61 lead with just over four minutes remaining in the game.

The teams were tied at 69-all when Illinois College went on a 7-1 run to end the contest.

Stephen, Reinneck, and Ashley Anderson finished as the three leading scorers in the game. Stephen posted 18 points, Reinneck had a 17 point afternoon, and Anderson added 14 points.

The Panthers made 22-of-62 field goal attempts and 8-of-22 three pointers. They sank 20-of-28 free throws.

Greenville (1-6) returns to action at Eureka on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
