Women's basketball hangs on for 70-68 overtime win at Eureka

EUREKA, Ill. - The women's basketball team faced Eureka on Wednesday night in a non-conference game and won a 70-68 decision in overtime.

Greenville led after each of the first three quarters and by as many as 20 points in the second quarter, but a 24-11 rally by Eureka in the final stanza took the game to overtime.

Despite leading throughout the game, Greenville actually faced a deficit late in the fourth quarter when a bucket with 17 seconds left gave Eureka a 62-60 advantage.

GU called a timeout, and Emily Reinneck missed a shot that was rebounded by the Red Devils and Madelyn Stephen immediately fouled. After the Eureka shooter missed both charity attempts, the Red Devils collected an offensive rebound and Greenville had to foul again, putting Eureka back at the free throw line.

Once again, Eureka could not make a free throw. This time, however, Greenville collected the defensive rebound, called a timeout, and advanced the ball to the front court for the inbound attempt.

With 1.7 seconds to go, Stephen found an open Payten Morris streaking to the basket after breaking away from a screen for a layup and the points that knotted the game at 62-all.

In OT, Greenville outscored Eureka 8-6 for the win and never trailed in the extra period. Morris scored six of her 10 points in overtime.

Stephen finished the game as the top scorer with 19 points. Reinneck totaled 16 points. Morris added a team-high nine rebounds.

Greenville's Ashley Anderson, Stephen, and Abigail Reinneck all had three steals.

The Panthers (2-6) return to the court on Wednesday, Feb. 24, at home against Webster in their first SLIAC contest of the season.
