Women's basketball earns 63-54 win over Spalding in SLIAC opener

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The women's basketball team recovered from a slow first quarter to take the lead by halftime and pulled away in the second half during their 63-54 SLIAC win over Spalding on Saturday afternoon.

Greenville struggled to get their offense going in the game and found themselves trailing 10-0 with 4:30 to play in the first quarter. GU scored 11 of the last 18 points and found themselves only behind 17-11 after one quarter.

GU outscored Spalding 19-8 in the second quarter and led 30-25 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Greenville pushed their lead to 45-37 and added one point to their lead with an 18-17 fourth quarter.

Natalie Iberg led the Panthers in the scoring column with 14 points, and Carolina Hoffman posted 13 points.

Savana Powell-Goodman reached double figures with 10 points and paced Greenville with six steals.

GU's leading rebounders in the contest, Cortney Brummer and Mia deJesus, each had eight rebounds. Bummer added five steals.

Hoffman, Sierra Compton, and Sophia Cisneros each finished with three assists.

The Panthers (4-3, 1-0 SLIAC) will face Westminster on the road on Wednesday night at 5:30 p.m.
