Women's soccer clinches first regular season SLIAC championship

LEBANON, Ill. - The women's soccer team defeated Iowa Wesleyan 9-0 in a senior night match on Thursday night at McKendree University. The win allowed the Panthers to clinch the first conference championship in the 25 seasons of women's soccer at Greenville University. The match was played at McKendree because of field conditions in Greenville at Francis Field.

The Panthers struck early with a goal in the first minute of the match and established a 3-0 lead by the 11th minute. The score stood at 8-0 at halftime.

At halftime, Greenville introduced its seniors. The seniors included trainer Paige Stanley, manager Courtney Blaser, and players Marjory Coates, Caitlin McLoughlin, Natty Hepburn-Beaty, Michelle Grotefendt, Brooklyn Haro, Breanna Thomas, and Ellie Cummins.

GU scored one goal in the second half, and the match was stopped in the 73rd minute.

Kate Arthur played a direct role in four of Greenville's goals with a goal and three assists.

Breanna Thomas was the leading scorer with two goals.

Athena Hagerman, Jen De Leon De Leon, Jade Taylor, Grotefendt, and Molly McDonnell added goals. Iowa Wesleyan also helped the Panthers with an own goal.

Haro, Cummins, and Bree Peck were each credited with one assist.

Greenville goalkeeper Coates was untested in the box.

The Panthers (10-5-2, 7-0-1 SLIAC) travel to Webster on Saturday where they will attempt to win the SLIAC title outright. The winner of Saturday's match will be the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament.
