Women's track and field places second at SLIAC championships

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The women's track and field team earned the conference runner-up position at the SLIAC championships on Friday and Saturday at the John M. Strahl Athletic Complex.

Greenville featured the efforts of entries who accounted for five gold medals. Overall, Greenville collected 170 points, second to Webster who had 258 points.

Cayden Sharp picked up a pair of golds in the race. She secured the championship in the high jump with a clearance of 5 feet-1.75 inches, and she won the 100 meter dash in 12.88 seconds.

Also on the track, Jessica Staley won the title in the 400 meter dash with a mark of 1:01.7.

Two throwers obtained the winning SLIAC distances. Deborah Cunningham posted a hammer throw of 141-2, and Savannah Maloney threw the javelin 95-10.

After the meet, Sharp was voted by conference coaches as the SLIAC newcomer of the year, and Kori Nesbit was honored with Greenville's position on the all-sportsmanship team.

The Panthers will compete at SIU Edwardsville on Friday.
