Sharp of women's track and field ranks 12th in heptathlon after day one

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The women's track and field program was represented by heptathlete Cayden Sharp in the NCAA Division III national meet on day one of the three-day championships. After the first four competitions, Sharp ranks 12th with 2686 points in a field of 19 competitors. She is the first heptathlete in Greenville's history to qualify for the NCAA Division III nationals and entered the event seeded 17th. She will also participate tomorrow.

In the day's first event, Sharp finished 11th, taking 819 points with a time of 15.17 seconds in the 100 meter hurdles. She placed first in her heat of four participants. Her time of 15.17 was her best in the hurdles in a heptathlon competition, just seven hundredths of a second shy of her career best in the event.

Sharp turned to the first field event next, earning 10th place and 689 points in the high jump. Sharp cleared her first attempts at 1.44, 1.47, 1.50, 1.53, and 1.56 meters before missing three attempts at 1.59 meters. Her final height cleared was 5 feet-1.25 inches.

In the third event, the shot put, Sharp was 19th with a mark of 8.00 meters (26-3). She achieved distances of 7.75 meters in both of her first two attempts before improving her final attempt to 8.00 for 399 points.

Moving back to the track for her fourth event, Sharp recorded a time of 26.21 seconds in the 200 meter dash, gaining 779 points. She was sixth in her heat, which featured the best six times. It was the second best time of her career and run into a headwind of just less than six miles per hour.

Sharp will conclude her season on Friday in the long jump, javelin, and 800 meter run competitions of the heptathlon.
