Sharp places ninth in long jump, holds fifth place after first day of heptathlon

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Cayden Sharp of the women's track and field team completed day one of the NCAA national championships by competing in the long jump and four of the seven events in the heptathlon.

Sharp advanced to the finals of the long jump, posting a distance of 5.73 meters (18 feet-10.75 inches) on her third attempt.

In the finals, Sharp fouled on her first two efforts and leapt 5.59 meters (18-4.25) on her last attempt.

She missed All-American recognition by a quarter of an inch.

Earlier in the day, Sharp started her national championship experience by ranking second in the 100 meter hurdles of the heptathlon, posting a time of 14.28 seconds for 939 points and a second place showing after the first event.

Sharp later recorded 712 points in the high jump, clearing 1.58 meters for seventh place in the event. She ranked fourth after two events.

The shot put competition came next on the schedule, and she offered a top attempt of 9.71 meters, collecting 510 points. She dropped one position to fifth after the 17th place mark.

In the 200 meter dash, Sharp posted a time of 25.65, taking the fifth place position and 828 points.

After day one, Sharp received 2989 points and held the fifth place position.

The national meet will continue Friday with the conclusion of the heptathlon.
