Tom Ackerman picks up 300th victory on GU bench

GREENVILLE, Ill. -- Taking the program from the middle to the top of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference was a nine year process for coach Tom Ackerman, but once the program earned its first championship in 2010, it has managed to stay on top.  On Tuesday, Ackerman chalked his 300th win as Greenville University head women's volleyball coach.

During Ackerman's 16-year tenure that began in 2002, the volleyball team has experienced a formidable amount of success. Over 16 years, his record stands at 300-161, a winning percentage of .651.

The accomplishments of Ackerman's teams have included seven consecutive SLIAC regular season championships; NCAA tournament bids in 2010, 2015, and 2016; seven consecutive seasons with 20 or more wins; and a record of 184-60 in the last eight seasons.

Coach Ackerman is also a five-time SLIAC "Coach of the Year" award recipient, and his teams have accrued a SLIAC record of 110-10 over the seven seasons that they were conference champions.

The teams were twice given the SLIAC Sportsmanship Award (2008 and 2014).

He has coached three SLIAC player of the year award winners (Jessica Dothager, twice; and Corinne Coon), three SLIAC defensive player of the year recipients (Kerry Hammer and Jamie Schollenbruch, twice), and five SLIAC newcomer of year honorees (Katelin Feyerabend, Tricia Gall, Corinne Coon, Allyson Mitchell, and Riley Hannula).  Fifty-seven student-athletes received all-conference honors with 22 on the first team, 20 second team, and 15 honorable mention/third team.

"In my time at Greenville I have always been surrounded by amazing assistant coaches and players who have contributed greatly to the success of the program," said Ackerman.  "This is a special team and the culture of winning starts and ends with relationships and full investment from everyone involved."

Ackerman also served as head men's volleyball coach for it's inaugural season in 2016, and the team finished with a 16-11 record and was seventh in the Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League. They topped all first year conference programs with their seventh place position in a league of 14 teams.

"Everyone associated with our program has bought in and winning is a byproduct of that investment.  I am honored to be a part of this program, and the love I have for everyone involved is overwhelming."
