Football dominates in season opener against Concordia Chicago
GREENVILLE, Ill. - The football team opened their season with a huge win against Concordia Chicago. The Panthers demolished the Cougars 54-23.
Need to Know:
The Panthers put up eight touchdowns, led by freshman quarterback, Max Lynch. Lynch ran the ball into the endzone four times and threw two completed touchdowns. Tanner Eubanks and Adrian Hinton were on the receiving end of those passes.
Hinton and Terrel Graves also had one rushing touchdown each.
How it Happened:
1st Quarter
After their first drive of the game, the Panthers punted to Concordia Chicago, which was muffed and recovered by GU's Jamarion Cobbins. Regaining possession, GU marched down the field for Hinton's rushing touchdown to put Greenville on the board.
2nd Quarter
On the Panthers' next drive, GU gained yardage with a rush and a completed pass, and then Lynch ran it in for a 30-yard rush. With the point after being good, the score climbed to 14-0.
Concordia Chicago kicked a 20-yard field goal on their second-quarter drive to make it 14-3.
Greenville quickly returned the points after a few first downs and a completed pass to Eubanks where he ran it thirty-one yards into the endzone.
The Cougars matched the touchdown before halftime but missed the extra point, making it 21-9 at the half.
3rd Quarter
After halftime, the Cougars closed the gap with a touchdown and an extra point on their first drive.
However, Lynch took it himself again for another rushing touchdown, making it 28-16.
4th Quarter
Greenville's offense exploded in the fourth quarter. The Panthers came out hot with an early 88-yard touchdown from Hinton.
Concordia tried matching it with another touchdown on their next drive but left their score at twenty-three for the remainder of the game.
The Panthers' offense didn't back off though; they added three more touchdowns to the board.
GU's offense wasn't the only remarkable thing about this game; the Panthers' defense was outstanding. They had four sacks and two interceptions.
Gabriel Stravers led the defense with nine tackles and one sack. Braeden Wells and Jaden Apple-Gibbs each had an interception for a gain.
