Football is 2-0 after defeating Eureka
EUREKA, Ill. - The football team returned home with their second win of the season. The Panthers conquered Eureka 27-7 with an impressive first and fourth quarter.
How it Happened:
1st Quarter
After an unsuccessful first drive, the Panthers redeemed themselves on Eureka's drive with a fumble recovery by Jaden Apple-Gibbs. Thomas Linnear forced the fumble and Apple-Gibbs recovered it at the 30-yard line and ran it in for Greenville's first touchdown, making it 6-0.
Greenville quickly regained possession after another Eureka fumble on the kickoff. This jumpstarted the Panthers' march downfield for their second touchdown. Lashawn Williams had an eight-yard rush to make it 12-0. Luke Miller kicked the extra point to solidify the 13-0 lead.
2nd Quarter
With a few rushes from Adrian Hinton and Terrance Brown, GU tried adding to the score but was stopped by the Red Devils.
In an attempt right before halftime, the Panthers tried to deke the defense with a completed pass to Williams who made a lateral pass to Delrey Crowder for a first down. However, the score remained the same at the end of the half.
3rd Quarter
Even after four more rushes by Hinton and a few from Max Lynch, the Panthers didn't manage to score at all in the third quarter.
At the end of the quarter, a 36-yard rush from Hinton gave the Panthers a first down to start the fourth quarter off strong.
4th Quarter
To start the quarter, Hinton had a rushing touchdown and Miller's extra point attempt was good. The Panthers climbed to 20-0.
On the next drive, Eureka managed to put themselves on the board, making it 20-7, but that didn't stop GU.
Greenville gave the ball to Hinton once again for him to run the ball thirty-two yards for GU's last touchdown. Miller had another good point after attempt to finalize the score at 27-7.
Elias Velasquez dominated Greenville's defensive lineup, posting a total of ten tackles and one and a half sacks.
Miller's performance earned him UMAC Football Special Teams Athlete of the Week.
