Golf returns to Greenville

GREENVILLE, Ill. – Greenville University has announced the reboot of its men's and women's golf programs for the 2025-26 school year. The relaunch follows the most recent 2016-17 season.

Coached by Dany Baker, the 2016-17 men's team returned after a 15-year hiatus, and the women's team made their debut. Both teams competed in the SLIAC where the men's program brought home the SLIAC sportsmanship trophy.

For next year's program, Roy Mulholland will take over as head coach for both teams, while continuing his duties as Greenville's head women's basketball coach.

Mulholland carries on a family legacy as he becomes head coach. His grandfather, Spencer Mulholland, started Greenville's golf program in 1949, coaching for eleven seasons and ending his GC coaching career in 1960.

Royal Mulholland, Coach Mulholland's uncle, also coached golf at GC for two seasons in 1970-71. Royal Mulholland is credited as being the first coach to have a winning record in Greenville golf history.

Coach Mulholland is excited to continue this legacy and add to GU history. "I am excited about the opportunity to restart the men's and women's golf program. While we want to do golf well, it is an amazing excuse to accomplish so much more. Faith integration will be at the heart of our program as we think about Christ-centered character and service. We will also emphasize academic excellence and competing in the classroom," said Mulholland. "At the end of the day, golf is a game and while learning to deal with the frustrations of the game, we will also learn to have fun and enjoy the process."

Mulholland will spend the upcoming year recruiting athletes to build both programs.

"I'm excited about bringing back a sport that has a long history of success at Greenville and that Coach Mulholland will be taking on that responsibility," said B.J. Schneck, director of athletics. "I look forward to seeing how his love for the sport of golf coupled with his ability to successfully recruit students will impact the program."
