ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The men's soccer team opened their 2021 spring season with a 2-1 loss in a non-conference match against Fontbonne.
Greenville had plenty of offensive opportunities, collecting 14 shots in the match, but they could only slip one attempt past the Fontbonne keeper. The Panthers out-shot Fontbonne 6-2 in the first half and 8-2 in the second half. Greenville also held a 5-1 advantage in corner kick attempts.
In the 43rd minute of the first half, Juan Salazar put the Panthers on the scoreboard and tied the match at 1-all with an unassisted goal.
Eric Miller made his debut at goalkeeper and permitted two goals, one of which was a penalty kick in the 89th minute that broke the 1-1 deadlock. Miller collected one save.
Jared McPeek led GU's offensive attack with a match-high three shots attempts, two of which were on goal. Salazar attempted two shots.
The Panthers (0-1) play a match against Illinois College in Jacksonville on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
