Softball falls to Belhaven in winner's bracket of regionals
The softball team was defeated 7-2 by Belhaven in the winner's bracket of the NCAA regional.
ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The softball team was defeated 7-2 by Belhaven in the winner's bracket of the NCAA regional.
The Blazers jumped on top in the second inning with two runs. In the top of the third, they hit a pair of home runs to make it 5-0.
The Panthers responded in the fourth inning with two runs. Natalee Moore got it started with a double up the middle, and Valerie Greenley followed her with an RBI single to center field. Sarah Salas sent a sac fly out to center field to score Greenley.
After GU gained some momentum, they returned to the field, having a quick 1-2-3 inning in the top of the fifth.
Moore had an amazing diving catch to record the first out of the sixth inning, but Belhaven still managed to tack on two runs, making it 7-2.
Josie Grunloh tried to get a rally going in the bottom of the sixth with a single to the right side. However, she was left on base and no runs scored.
Greenville left the score at 7-2 to finish the game.
Salas and Greenley split time on the mound for GU. Salas worked 2.2 innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits. Greenley relieved her in the third inning, throwing 4.1 innings, only letting up one earned run on four hits.
The Panthers (35-9) will play in a 4 p.m. elimination game against the winner of the WashU and Grinnell game.
