Women's volleyball battles against Illinois College in 3-2 loss
JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - The women's volleyball team had an extremely close match with Illinois College on Tuesday evening. The Panthers took it to five close sets. Unfortunately, Greenville lost the fifth one 15-12 resulting in a 3-2 loss.
How it Happened:
1st Set
After falling behind 9-14, The Panthers rallied to eventually tie it up 17-17.
Greenville and IC battled back and forth until GU came out on top 27-25.
GU managed to put away fourteen kills to lead them to victory.
2nd Set
The Panthers matched Illinois Col. until about halfway through the set where they started to have some attacking and service errors that led to the 25-16 loss.
Abby Grohmann led the team in set two with five kills.
3rd Set
Greenville persisted though to claim the third set 25-22.
The Panthers gained an early lead with a couple of kills and a service ace from Grohmann.
Even though IC managed to put points on the board, GU kept the lead as their offense flourished in this set. The Panthers collected twelve kills as a team.
4th Set
The Panthers fell 25-19 in the fourth set but saw kills from Anna Beth Vancil, Mia deJesus, and Elaina Evers to boost their offense.
GU posted ten kills in this set.
5th Set
Since the game sat at 2-2, the teams were forced to play a fifth game. Unfortunately, the Panthers lost 15-12.
It was a back-and-forth set right up until the end. The Panthers regained the serve at 11-12, but IC tacked on two points before Greenville got the ball back.
Claudia Bonacorsi sent a serve over for the game point, but Illinois Col. put one away to win it all.
Grohmann led the Panthers with a total of twenty-two kills, a kill percentage of .304, and nine digs.

The Panthers (4-5) travel to Principia on Saturday to start conference play. They face Principia at 11:00 a.m. and Fontbonne at 1:00 p.m.
